Which Jamaican leader owns that $300M “palace” being built on the hill ?

There has been talk going around about a house which is being built for which the estimated cost is in the region of $300m.

Tongues have been wagging since the information was “dropped” sometime last week.  What is interesting is the media who obviously have more information that I do , have refused thus far to call the name of leader, leading to wide spread speculation that it belongs to the leader of the  ruling PNP administration the Rt Honuorable  poor people champion.

If the information that I have gleaned so far is in fact true, it would confirm the widely held belief we have as it relates to the country leaders.

It also begs the question as to why the assets of our elected leaders are not made public, why are we as a people refusing to hold our elected leaders accountable.

  2. I thought it was Andrew Holness they were refering to.

“Just ask the leader of the Opposition, Andrew Holness, and his wife Juliet who are building what appears to be a fortress in Beverly Hills.”

I’ve heard others speculate about him builiding a 30,000 brick house on forums and that the US State department was concerned about him building a house he couldn’t afford. Don’t remember if its on here or another blog that I saw it.

  3. I thought they could hardly afford to send the kids to school.

    • Jamaican politicians cannot be trusted. We must call upon all elected public officials to declare their assets annually.

Why is that so difficult ?

      Why

      • Jay, you and your fellow bloggers are utterly ridiculous, there are so many important issues happening and you choose to focus on gossip. Although, I have contempt for the present administration, I have no problem with a politician building a 300 million dollar home, if he is doing it with his money. The problem is that we live in a world where people are forced to hate the rich for working hard and amassing wealth. Many politicians who build big mansions did not get the funds from government coffers, but illegal activities. It would be good if you would focus on illegal proceeds and not the fact that a politician is building a big house. It’s just like the people in the democratic party, who lament tax cuts for the rich, when in fact these tax cuts created jobs and increased revenues year after year, you can assess the bush tax cuts in the Economic Report of the President

        • …”Many politicians who build big mansions did not get the funds from government coffers, but illegal activities”…..

Some what true. They also divert huge campaign contributions to their “personal” accounts. There are a few that launder dirty money for a significant fee.

        • Lipton,

There are some threads that you can skip over and move unto the other important ones.
The point you missed on this one, which is very important is the issue of the filing of reports on the assets owned by public officials, which can give a good indication if they are involved in corrupt activities.

Jamaica’s ranking on the corruption index has not been improving and that is a cause for concern, since a significant portion of Jamicans believe they are corrupt but only one has ever been charged and found guilty for such an act.

They have been getting away with it due to our failure to demand they make public declaration of their assets and where they cannot explain the disparity between income and assets, we address that issue.

        • BTW,

Focusing in on the house is one way of trying to determine, SOF.

The UK and USA have been focusing on assets of those whom they suspect are involved in illegal activities.
The assets acquired are in fact an outward manifestation of the ill got gains, which forms the basis of an investigation.

Never miss that point , this is where it all begins.

The question is, who will be the ones in Jamaica moving to determine if something is wrong here ?

  4. @jay, what happen when all suspected assets are brought/listed in other people’s names or other untraceable business entities (can easily be done by the experts)? Essentially, filing of reports on the assets owned by public officials are really a silly pursuit, since it can be easily defeated/compromised. Yuh a agree boss?
