DIGICEL cuts Voice over internet, is this legal?

The company has indicated its losing revenue as operators use the internet to bypass its network in allowing calls for which no terminations rates are being paid.

Lime has stopped supporting viber on its network, as this service has been identified as one service that is bypassing its network.

  1. There a many VOIP apps out there and many ways to get around this block. Not sure how reliable VOIP is on 4G in Jamaica and if there are any noticeable lag in the two way communication between users. Are there that many users using Viper or other VOIP applications to warrant them blocking the service? Don’t these services eat up your data plan for which the user is already paying a fee?

I read today that Viper is now claiming there have ways around the blocking of Viper on Digicel and Lime, so we shall see how effective these two carriers are in eliminating the use of the VOIP over 4G.
