Peter Phillips is the De Facto Prime Minister of Jamaica

Just in case you have failed to notice, the Finance Minister of Jamaica Dr Peter Phillips is the one who is really running things in Jamaica, while the Prime Minister on paper is running from and running around things in Jamaica.

Dr Peter Phillips despite what others may want to say about him, has taken firm control of the Finance Ministry and is embarking on journey in what finally maybe a time when Jamaica may begin to experience real economic growth. You get the felling that Peter is passionate about what he does and really want to make a difference for Jamaica and not himself. I cannot say the same about the Prime Minister on paper, who puts herself at the center of everything and whose sole goal appears to be one of self, while appearing to be about the upliftment of others.

Dr Phillips has been doing a reasonable good job in “managing” the IMF program ( yes we know he has no choice), but with a populist leader to report to, he could have gone off and done what was politically correct and not what is required to meet the IMF stipulations.

I am still not yet convinced that the IMF program is the one that will bring about economic growth in Jamaica, but then again, what is the alternative. Peter Phillips said today in the Gleaner ” Jamaica must live with its means” and he is darned right about that, we can no longer pretend to live the fairly tale life we have been living, where we borrow to drive expensive car, live in houses we cannot afford and maintain and unsustainable debt.

When Dr Phillips speaks, he does so with authority and like a man who knows what he is all about.   It’s a pity we cannot say the same thing about Portia Simpson Miller, who loves to take the praises when things appear to be going right but kick and screams when she is criticised, when things are heading south.

Portia Simpson Miller should ride off into the sunset and allow the able Dr Peter Phillips, who is the de facto Prime Minister of Jamaica, to become the leader of the party and the next Prime Minister of Jamaica.

Sorry Phillip Paulwell, you are not ready to lead this country, you talk too much, make too much announcements and deliver too little.

  1. Phillip Paulwell bragged about reducing energy rates by 2015, although the World Bank declared that it wasn’t possible. Paulwell is just over zealous and incompetent, Phillips keeps saying the right things but I doubt he has the political will to take the country to where I want it to go.

  2. Peter Phillips is a PATRIOT!! The greatest thing about his performance is that it has neutered Shaw and Holness. Lol. They are a pathetic sight in parliament.

    • Sam Sharpe, I wouldn’t say that yet. Remember that the economic environment is relatively contractionary, yes he is reducing the debt and repaying loans, but there is still a tax shortfall, the market is still very tight and Dr.Phillips does not have enough competent people in the cabinet

  3. The tax shortfall should be an opportunity to prioritize. We have been spending and not earning for too long. What i admire about this Man is that he does not speak with a forked tongue and is resolute. Hopefully we can get the Minister of Announcements to understand what IMPLEMENTATION really means. His portfolio is extremely critical to any growth prospects.
