Dr Carlton Davis defense of the Prime Minister travels.

Dr Carlton Davis is a highly respected public servant and one who is admired by many. He is also one of the most senior advisors to the Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller.

In both the daily papers today Dr Davis has come to the defense of the Prime Minister amidst outcry about her many overseas trips, calling them warranted He made the point that head of state must travel as not everything can be done via video conferencing, which is true.

Dr Davis is no doubt s very learned man, but he has become victim of what is typical for persons of his standing and that is saying a lot to say very little and in so doing  very skillfully omitted the substantive point or concerns of those like myself who are critical of the Prime Minister many travels.

The concerns of many Jamaicans like myself who all want the best for the country and value for every dollar spent are as follows.

We feel disrespect and slighted to wake up and hear one of the following

“ The Prime Minister the Hon Portia Simpson Miller, left the island last night to attend … etc etc , accompanying the Prime is X, Y and Z as well as security personnel “

Or

“The Prime Minister, the Right Hon Portia Simpson –Miller leaves the island today for an official visit to whoo e whoo, accompanying the  Prime Minister is x, y  and Z and well as her security staff. She is due back in the country at such and such a date”

There are a number of issues with the PM’s travel namely:

  1. The purpose of the trip.
  2. The expected outcomes
  3. The purpose of each member of the delegation and their role.
  4. The absence of a report after the trip has ended and whether or not the stated objectives were achieved.
  5. The failure to report that the Prime Minister is back in the country.

Dr Carlton Davis, is this asking too much of our Prime Minister and her team. Since you who are paid advisor has jumped to her defense, is it not the right of the people of the country who have employed the Prime Minister on a 5 yr contract to question how OUR money is spent?

Is it not OUR right to have the Prime Minister report to US on the outcome of each of these trips and let us make a determination, if we got value for money?

I’d be damned, but I have a right to know. When close to 49.5% of my monthly earnings goes towards paying for people like Dr Davis and other members of the Government I have a right to know and no ONE will be allowed to trample on my rights, not even those who claim to be well learned and more “degreed” than I and many others are.

We will continue to question the value of each trip by members of this government on merit and not telling us about the trips to avoid the questions is NOT an option.

  1. This information can be had from the Minister of Information. She has a full time job to provide information to the public. Blame the Minister of Information if you are not getting the required info

    The purpose of the trip.
    The expected outcomes
The purpose of each member of the delegation and their role.
The absence of a report after the trip has ended and whether or not the stated objectives were achieved.
The failure to report that the Prime Minister is back in the country.

    • Are you satisfied with what information you are receiving . From all you have stated here the PM does not need to speak to the people.

      Ok , I get it.

      • If most persons are not getting proper information or if you are not satisfied with the information, then the minister of information should be fired . The PM does not need to give a press conference after every meeting she goes to. that why there is a Minister of Information.

The PM should give national broadcast at scheduled intervals.

        • The problem is she does nothing ! That is totally unacceptable. We lilke to speak about first world, just look at how Obama operates.

If PSM was the president she would have been asked to resign by the American people.

In Jamaica we are fed crap and are happy to accept it.

  2. Ms. Falconer has turned off some media people by her attitude, so that’s why she is facing this difficulty

  3. The information Minister reports to the Prime Minister and she cannot report on what she does not know or has not been approved by her boss.

Using this logic, it seems as if the Prime Minister is the one who needs to be fired !

    • No. Portfolio Minister. You fire operational person first !!!. Information is there. If information is not getting out it is the Information Minister.

Crime is getting out of Control. you fire the Minister of national security. you file portfolio ministers first , then if it gets out of hand, you fire the prime minister.

      • In decent countries the leader takes full responsibilty and lead the charge to make changes or resigns.

In Jamaica we give everyone a bly !

  4. Dr. Davis is singing for his supper. Many persons think the undated letters of resignation is just a Holness phenomenon; different variations of it exists in the other party as well as in different sections of the society. In the case of Dr. Davis and people like Delano Franklin, it is “since you are both more articulate than me, you must defend me in the media” or else……

  5. Portia Simpson Miller should just resign, she has no sense of direction whatsoever, although some of her trips are important others have been a waste of money, but why do we expect a sports fanatic to be a good prime minister? After all Portia was never known to take responsibility for anything this is the same woman who knew nothing about trafigura or olint
