Speaking with the average Jamaican about what are their biggest concern and it’s more than likely nine out of ten will suggest crime is their primary concern. There has been many research, which shows the significant negative impact crime has on the country from an economic standpoint, but what I believe get missed is the pain and anguish from losing a loved one and the losses associated with the death of someone who could contribute to the economy of Jamaica.
Every year over 1000 lives are lost to criminal elements in Jamaica, where life has become so cheap that all it takes today is one $5000 bill to have your life snuffed out by contract killers.
What is more worrisome, it 9 out of 10 times the killer and the persons who paid to have you killed is likely to escape punishment ie they more than likely will never be caught.
Now for years, we have spoken about the need to bring to books, new laws than can hopefully improve the rate at which we can capture and convict these criminal elements, but for the last two years we have not been able to get either of these two legislation through the house, why.
Let us quickly examine a number of legislation that have been rushed through the house since the start of this year.
- Anti lottery law. This was pushed through due to pressure being brought to bear on the country by the mighty USA. This law seeks to punish Jamaicans who have scammed citizens of the USA ( Note it intends to protect USA citizens). USA Requirement
- Amendment to the NHT act. This piece of legislation was rushed through to allow the Government to access over $45b from the NHT. IMF Requirement.
- Omnibus legislation. Intended to remove /reorganize tax incentive schemes. IMF requirement.
- Funding legislation . Intended to allow for different asset classes to be used as collaterals for loans. IMF requirement.
- Ponzi scheme legislation . Intended to protect the financial sector . IMF requirement.
Now I am sure there are other than I missed, but the main point of my argument is, the Jamaican Government led by Portia Simpson Miller has managed to push through a number of legislation, all intended to meet the requirement of some outside interest and to a lesser extent the interest of the Jamaican people.
The GOJ is on record of saying we CANNOT complete the two most important peices of legislations which can go a far way in getting criminal conviction of those involved in serious crimes and which results in the loss of lives of JAMAICANS, simply because they are too busy ensuring that the legislations required by the IMF are all completed in a timely manner.
Jamaican lives are therefore being sacrificed at the proverbial ” Altar” so that the IMF conditionalities are all met, because we simply cannot afford to miss any deadline set by the IMF.
The Jamaican politician DOES not care about the lives of Jamaicans that are being lost and Jamaicans themselves do not give a fcuk about the lives of fellow Jamaicans that are being lost, expect of course if it’s one of their family members.
How on earth can one explain the fact that after at least two years of talking not a single one of the legislation that all the experts believe can help tame the crime monster have been passed by the Jamaican parliament.
How on earth does one accept the fact that Jamaicans have sat on their collective asses and accepted this crap and the loss of lives that may have been saved had the legislations been enacted earlier this year.
Why have we accepted that it’s ok for our citizens to be murdered and the murders continue to get away with it, because our politicians say sorry, we cannot pass these bills because we have to focus on those for the IMF.
Why have we accepted that our elected members can sit ONCE every fu@#king day per week out of 7 possible days and then tell us , they cannot pass legislation to deal with our crime problems, because we do not have enough time (days) to sit and debate these documents.
I posit that Jamaicans are indeed stupid to accept this crap and our continued stupidity will allow another year to pass with no legislation in place because IMF conditionalities on economic matters are far more important that the lives of Jamaicans.
Today will end and another 3 persons will be murdered and the criminals are all likely to escape as the tools we have today, will be insufficient to catch them.
Before the end of 2013, another 60 Jamaicans will be murdered by at least one gunman each and maybe in 5 of these cases, someone is caught and 2 convicted.
IMF over the life of a Jamaican !
True words. I have given up on Jamaica. We are a hopeless case.
Jay, i guess you hit the nail on the head with this blog.

Agree!
Jamaica need radical changes. On can not reason with the madness that is taking place in the country. We need to get rid of both the instigators (politicians) and the foot soldiers (shottas, corrupt police force) by all mean necessary. We have pass the proverbial “tipping point” and on a collision course with anarchy.
Before the ink has dried on this post I see someone has posted a link where 4 persons have been murdered thus far today. How much longer will we sit back and allow this to continue, while every GOJ minister is provided with security ?
We have truly become the laughing stock of the entire Caribbean.
Qui bono?

12 murdered in Montego Bay and here is what has been reported.
“I don’t know if they are moving away from scamming to robbery, but I do know that some of the criminals who have challenged us in recent gun battles have turned out to be men with lottery-scam antecedents,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Warren Clarke, the commanding officer for Area One, which covers St James, Hanover, Westmoreland, and Trelawny, stated in a recent Gleaner interview.
If that is indeed true, well juxtapose that with my comments above which said
Anti lottery law. This was pushed through due to pressure being brought to bear on the country by the mighty USA. This law seeks to punish Jamaicans who have scammed citizens of the USA ( Note it intends to protect USA citizens). USA Requirement.
So if Warren Clarke is right, the Jamaican Government put a law in place that seeks to protect the interest of Americans and this new law now turns out to have assisted in snuffing out the lives of Jamaicans.
What does the people do, bawl murder and its then business as usual once again.
Jamaicans are indeed very smart people 😦
