The repatriation of 13 Jamaican Nationals from a single flight has brought outrage and condemnation from Jamaicans at home and abroad. What is instructive however, is this comes just one month after the Caribbean Court Of Justice (CCJ) ruled that the domestic laws cannot be used any more to turn back Caribbean Nationals at the port of entry and stipulated the only two reasons that can be used to deny someone carrying a caricom passport hassle free entry into Caribbean Nations.
The Government of Jamaica and specifically the PNP headed by AJ Nicholson is Gung ho over the CCJ and is urging that all Jamaicans to come on board as this MUST be our final appellate court and in so doing leave the UK based Privy Council.
Now the CCJ is supposed to be the highest court in the Caribbean and its rulings are final and cannot be contest or overruled. Now just one month after the Shanique Myrie ruling Trinidad and to a less extent Barbados have simply brushed aside the ruling of the CCJ and carrying on with what they were doing before this ruling.
Trinidad has ignored the ruling of the highest court in the region and the Prime Minister of that country is in total agreement with the officials who have sought to flout the ruling of the CCJ. This to me is a now a very serious issue and leads one to wonder if the ruling of the CCJ on any matter is worth the paper its written on.
This is the court AJ Nicholson is insisting we should now have as our final appellate court and we Jamaicans should not become a part of the process in making in determination as to get our full participation on this matter would be too expensive via a referendum.
Well I’ll be dammed if I don’t let my voice and the voice of others be heard. Trinidad has chosen to work with its own rules and has violated a clear ruling from the very same CCJ that AJ Nicholson wants Jamaica to move to.
Now consider if the ruling on the Myrie’s case had come from the Privy Council of the UK, do you think either Barbados or Trinidad would thumb their noses at this ruling, hell no they would not.
AJ Nicholson, until other Caricom leaders decide to stop being insular and begin to show respect to all Caricom Nationals, please go to hell and leave us with the UK Privy Council. You and your ministry has been an embarrassment to the many Jamaicans who have been mistreated at the port of entry in many Caribbean Island and I have not seen you doing anything to bring back respectability to my fellow Jamaicans.
When last have you demanded from other Caribbean Countries a list and names of the Jamaicans who may have been incarcerated in these countries and has taken steps to determine what are the circumstances surrounding those who have been locked away, many simply because they are Jamaicans.
Despite some being freed after contacting various newspapers and having their stories heard, the Ministry headed by AJ Nicholson has not done anything proactive in making a determination if others have been locked up and the reasons they have been,
I am angry with the position taken by AJ Nicholson on many issues and I think this man needs to be removed forthwith from the office he holds. He has not done a damn thing since taking office to improve the image of Jamaica overseas nor has he had a stellar performance in looking after the interest of Jamaicans overseas.
AJ Nicholson , if you think the CCJ is the “cats meow”, then put it to the people, let us decide, we do NOT trust you and the rest of comrades to do what is in OUR best interest.
AJ Nicholson MUST now pack his bags and go, he has bee nothing but an abject failure.
