There is no strong consumer advocacy group in Jamaica and the people of the country refuse to have their voices heard all due to narrow political interest.
PNP supporters will not call out for a boycott of anything once it implemented by the PNP and under a PNP government and the same applies for the JLP.
If however the policies are applied by their political opponents you will get some protest before eventually everyone complies.
When one look at countries that are in a better financial position that us protesting for days over price increases of a few cents and which in many cases represent a low % increase, we are like ” a dat dem a protest fah”.
In Jamaica we accept 20 and even 100% increases with a smile because close to half the population supports those making out lives harder and feel a sense of betryal if the protest.
Then there is the big class divide that helps support these no protest. Those Jamaican who can easily afford to say pay the increase for an item, will go out of there way to make it publicly known, that they can afford it. What this does is to help separate them from the rest of the crowd.
We are a people who like to ensure our social status is known and so anything that help us to keep that in place is accepted. Its a case of ” see mi betta dan u cuz mi can buy it n u caan do dat, so u done know say a so we roll”.
Until we change our mindset, the poor in Jamaica will continue to bear the brunt of the increases and become poorer, while the middle class will cease to exist.
Our mentality has kept us back this long and appears set to continue in this direction for sometime to come.
