A member of the RJR news team has his microphone turned off because he was unrelentingly in his questions of the PNP information minister. Its been over 48hrs since that very disturbing incident occurred at a post cabinet press conference hosted by Sandrea Falconer and to this date, there has been condemnation or outcry form the once very vocal media fraternity.
Has the media become a group of pussycats ?
Why has there been no condemnation of this incident which appears to have been designed to muzzle a member of the press ?
Can we come to expect more of this from the PNP when they feel uncomfortable about the line of questioning by journalist?
Is this the beginning of the removal of freedom accorded to press to ask questions of the government?
I may not be in main stream media, but I must admit for the first time in a very long time, I am very concerned about the ability of media to gain access to government members as we seek to have questions asked or seek clarification on matters of national interest.
Press Association of Jamaica and other related organizations, over to you.
I guess a lot of media practitioners are now left feeling a little coy after their favourite political party has thrown dirty water in their faces.
The press and the electorate must now be wondering what kind of monster they have created by ensuring the massive electoral victories for the PNP.
In the haste to rid the country of the JLP government, the PNP was given a bly without being seriously quizzed about its various promises. PSM got away with statements such as “I won’t disclose my plans because I don’t want JLP to steal them”.
Public fanfare initiatives such as the Progressive Agenda, JEEP and Jamaica Employ are failures. The prime minister’s inauguration speech about corruption was just lip service.
In the leadership debate she boasted about being tough on corruption because she made a former minister went to prison for it. But she failed to mention that it is easy being tough on corruption when it is someone not in your party.
I expected all this. I had no high hopes for this government and the sooner the people realise that we have the ultimate power and not the politicians it is only then things will get better.
Another post from last year about the treatment of the press by the PNP.
How the act and get away with it on a consistent basis continues to amaze me
