Jamaicans have better stop laughing about Haiti and get a grip as Haiti now seems set to move away from the bottom of the many list leaving Jamaica and Guyana to fight for that bottom spot.
Haiti , which has a turbulent history and has been plagued with disasters after disasters ranging from raging floods due to the denuded hillside, to that horrific earthquake and then poor leadership is slowly emerging to take her place in the world. The Haitian economy has grown at an average rate of just about 4.5% over the last three years and is expected to have one of the largest growth projection in the Caribbean of close to 5.5%.
Haiti, which has been the bone of many jokes may very soon be the one doing the laughing at places like Jamaica, which have not been able to generate any meaningful growth over the last 40 yrs .
Now an organization called Reputation Institute has released the 2013 Countries Reputation report and amazingly Haiti is ranked in the top 50 countries in the world coming in at # 38, ahead of countries like Venuezula , Boliva, Suadi Arabia and China. Countries not making the list are Barbados and Trinidad , who would have also been expected to be on such a list. I guess Jamaica can take comfort in that fact since misery loves company.
Topping the list is Canada, followed by Sweden and Switzerland , USA was ranked # 22
Folks take a look this very revealing document.
I wonder if someone will also challenge this list of countries also ?
Folks, Haiti is poised to take off, but Jamaica is not and here is what our Finance Minister has to say recently .
Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips says despite the gains made by Jamaica over the past 75 years, the country is yet to establish an economic foundation that will enhance growth and development and allow citizens to achieve their dreams if they work hard.
