Portia Simpson Miller speaks in Trinidad and Tobago 7/4/2013

In a passionate address, Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller drew spontaneous applause as she spoke yesterday of the beauty of steelpan music, the revolutionary power of reggae and the athletic prowess of Caribbean sport persons at the London Olympics.

Simpson Miller said: “We, the Caribbean are a great people whose spirit continues to infuse the world with music, colour, spice, vibrancy and excitement. No challenge can daunt a people who created the technology that makes sweet music from steelpans. No problem can stop people whose reggae musical forms have inspired revolutionary change across the world. What can deter peoples whose athletic prowess, defies the laws of physics and whose depth of thought is seen the distinguished scholarship?
“Remember the London Olympics? They had to change the relay. Why? The Caribbean. No one would have watched (the race) if that relay had taken place the end of the ceremony. And so we are a great people. The world stood still when the Caribbean took centre stage at the Olympics. Nothing can stop a united Caribbean people who hail from the crest of the blue mountains from the glassy waters of the Grand Anse, from the deep forests of Guyana and Suriname. We celebrate the beautiful bays of St Vincent, the hot sulfur springs of St Lucia and Dominica,” she said to cheers from the audience.
