Antigua’s success with the IMF, will Jamaica have similar success ?

Antigua signed a deal with the IMF and which expires this year.

Antigua is claiming success, will Jamaica do the same 4 yrs from now.

“We did this with the grace of a mature nation, not the grief of mendicants expecting the outside world to solve our problems,” he said.

Under the programme, Antigua’s fiscal deficit dropped from 18 per cent of GDP in 2009 to just over one per cent last year, said the IMF

  1. Antigua also had one of the deepest and longest recessions in the Caribbean with them losing nearly 20% of their GDP from 2008 to 2011 according to the World Bank. I tell you the Antiguan government must be spending pretty much NOTHING now in comparison to what it was spending in 2008 given that the GDP had fallen by so much yet the deficit to GDP ratio has also fallen by so much.

Was it worth it as a nation? The future will tell.

    • Antigua and St.Kitts have been classified as highly developed countries. While, Jamaica is still on the failed states index warning list

      • Okay? I’m not sure if that was some sort of counter to my comment or what. My point is that the country went to the IMF and instituted very strict austerity to try to get their fiscal deficit/GDP ratio down. They successfully did that but at the expense of 18% of their GDP, a BIG chunk. It’s likely that had the government of Antigua chosen a strategy other than the IMF program that they would be even more prosperous today, but their deficit would be much higher.

        • My point is that Jamaica is a failed state, Antigua can manage its economy, while Jamaica is governed by buffoons. In addition, I am a conservative, so I have no problem with Antigua’s policies. Latvia had to implement deep budget cuts and today its economy is picking up. We need Margaret Thatcher

We need Margaret Thatcher, not a power hungry nitwit like Portia
