Taxing of bicycles next ?

Its not that far fetched given that we are now going after hand-cart men.

Seriously though, something needs to be done about these bicycles on the road as they have become a nuisance and in many cases have put motorist and pedestrians at risk.

Our Urban Planners must not be let off the hook either, as they have given very little consideration to the fact that pedal cyclist are a part of the landscape and so must be accommodated.

Case in point, look the “highway” to Portmore. This road was  by motorist and pedal cyclist alike, but then they went ahead and upgraded the road network without giving any sort of consideration for those who power themselves to work on a daily basis. They then went ahead and placed signs which said “No Pedestrian of Pedal Cyclist Allowed”

So what do you end up with? Well exactly what we expected and that is people ignoring the sign and making their way to and from their homes along this road way on pedal cycle.

With just a little more thought and not much expenditure they could have placed a cycle lane, which was physically separated by a fence to accommodate these folks, which would not only have made it safe for these individuals, but would ensure that they have No reason to break the law.

That aside, however we cannot having pedal cyclist riding on the wrong side of the road and in so doing forcing motorist to swing from them and into the adjoining lane, thus put the lives of these motorist at risk.

The cops see it daily but pay it no attention, while drives continue to forth at the mouth as they try to negotiate Jamaica’s treacherous roads.

I think they deserved to be ticketed for violation of the road code. ( I am assuming that these is something there that speaks to this as a violation).

  1. DRIVE LEFT PASS RIGHT. SLOW LANE PEOPLE!!!!

  2. Wh does that surprise you? I was speaking to an elder the other daywho told aboutthe bicycle taxes he paid in the 1950s. Plus he’d get fiined if he didn’t use his light and his bell right.

  3. Of course the problem is that if you attempt to fine the cyclists for not following the road code (which I’m sure includes rules for usage of a bicycle as can be seen in satanforce’s example of fines for not using the light and the bell right in the 1950s) then a number of people will come out in support of the “poor and trying” cyclist who is just trying to get by in these hard times and make a living or some such nonsense. Never mind that bicycles are not free and their maintenance is not free either, so obviously all cyclists must have some amount of money they are prepared to spend. Thus cyclists should be prepared (like everybody else who owns any kind of vehicle) t0 afford the fines if it is they truly feel an urgent desire to break the road code on a daily basis. If they don’t want to pay fines then the solution is simple: don’t break the road code.
