Can the economic conditions in Jamaica get any worse, $5.00 for a squeeze of toothpaste ?

Today , I received two reports from a trusted friend and even for me who know the “runnings” in Jamaica it was a shocker.

I was told that there was a restaurant in New Kgn, where the proprietors now have meals that are  very affordable for many Jamaicans, who cannot afford to buy more expensive meals. The restaurant is now offering a very affordable meal of rice and gravy( you heard me right), I did say rice and gravy.

Further to the , West in the Kingston 11 area, you can buy bread by slices, which I was aware, but I never knew that you could get a “squeeze” of toothpaste for $5.00, which is being made available by some very enterprising shop keeper.

The hard times have taken such a hold on some folks in this country, that I shudder to think of what will happen to this country if the economic situation does not get better in a hurry.

I feel like we are back in the 1970’s once again.

  1. We can hardly compare these days to the ’70s. Different circumstances, different causes, different impact, different result. For one it’s hardly arguable that the present economic woes are a DIRECT fault of the current and past governments while many people (including myself to a pretty large extent) defer the direct blame of the ’70s economic crisis away from the Jamaican government.

    • Your interpretation of history is quite correct. Quite interesting that the solutions to our current challenges were the ones been articulated in the 70s.

  2. As I listen/watch CVM with Garfield Burford and Omar Azan, I left with the feeling that Jamaica is in a sink hole from, which we will have very difficult time to come out of.

While the program provided a lot of insight into the economic situation, the IMF deal etc, I am more depressed that when the program started.

Very good program from an information standpoint and one that people really need to watch, I hope its available online so those who miss it can watch.

Omar Azan confirmed what information I had received re people buying a squeeze of toothpaste.
I cannot recall in recent history where Jamaicans have been reduced to this level of poverty.

  3. I wrote this in May and the Observer is now getting a hang of what is really going on in Jamaica and to the poor that the PNP claims to love so much.

    Bread sold by the slice

“People are really struggling right now. Them spending power gone so if you don’t get creative you bound to suffer,” she said, while attending to a customer at her shop last Friday.
Pauline explained that her customers can purchase a quarter of a loaf of bread.
“Well for me I sell a quarter of the bread for $50 and if they want, people can purchase a cut of butter for $20,” said Pauline, explaining that this butter is just enough to spread on two slices of bread

PNP best party to create more poor people and poverty, so that equates to move committed voters.

Way to go, tun e up until e bun up.

The poor will only come to the realization when there backs are against the wall and with nowhere else to run.

  4. I hope David Biles read this story the next time he visits this blog.

  5. The price for a squeeze of toothpaste has double since this report. It now cost $10 for a squeeze of toothpaste. Economic progress for real, the program is indeed working to good effect.

More poor people shall be created by 2016.
