Jamaican politicians really love properties in the USA !

Mark Golding’s Florida getaway, tucked away in Broward County.

Note : Property was acquired before Golding was recently appointed as Justice Minister, so don’t be quick to jump to suggest property acquisition was improper.

Trinidad is doing exactly what the Jamaican government has failed to do for Jamaica !

The JMA is up in arms with the Government of Trinidad and Tobago over what is being terms as  the unfair competition that exist between Jamaica and Trinidad.

The current trade imbalance between Jamaica and Trinidad is in the region of US$1.8B in favour of Trinidad and Jamaica Manufacturers Association wants that to change and in a hurry.

I would however (as usual) like to take a completely different look at the situation that exists between Jamaica and Trinidad. Everyone by now would know that Trinidad has oil and as such as one of the lowest if not the lowest energy cost in the entire region.

The JMA has insisted that this subsidy of low energy cost at US$0.06 per kwh vs Jamaica’s approx US$0.35 per kwh creates and unfair advantage to Trinidad in terms of the cost to manufacturer goods and services. In addition to that, goods manufactured in Trinidad has duty free access to the Jamaican market, which is the largest in the region, making it very difficult for Jamaica to compete with goods made in Trinidad.

(Note, The low price of electricity is enjoyed by all residents of Trinidad and Tobago and as such, is really not a special incentive to its manufacturer’s)

Having gone through all the above, what is so wrong with what the Trinidadians are doing, I don’t get it. When we elect a government, what’s our expectation from that government?

  1. Don’t we expect the government to create policies and a business  friendly environment , which allows local business to thrive?
  2. Don’t we expect the government to create the economic environment that allows for growth and job creation for its people?
  3. Don’t we expect the government to create the environment that allows the citizens of the country to enjoy the benefits of the resources of the country?
  4. Don’t we expect the government to create the environment that allows local business to be as efficient as possible and dominate its trading partners in terms of competitiveness?

Now having reviewed items 1 –4 above, can someone really tell me what’s so wrong with what the Trinidadians are doing?

If Jamaica were Trinidad would we not expect our government to do exactly what the Trinidadians are doing today .

The government of and Tobago is doing exactly what  successive Jamaican governments have failed to do over the last 50 yrs and now having seen the results of our failures we are  jealous of the success of  the Trinidadians.

I will close by saying, if Jamaica were to exchange places with Trinidad, and  one checks  us after 50 yrs, they would finds us  right back where we are today for the simple reason that we really have no interest in the welfare of the people of this country. Oil would not benefit Jamaica and Jamaicans as much as it has done in Trinidad, instead I predict we would become more like Nigeria, where the wealth from oil would have been concentrated in the hands of the few and we would be as corrupt as Nigeria is today. We share so much in common with Nigeria and so it’s not a far stretch to become like they are given where we find ourselves today.

I say back off Trinidad and instead look at what they have done to make them a success then try to replicate that here in Jamaica by utilizing the natural resources of the country.

Cuts every where, but budget doubles for State functions ?

Almost every sector has felt the axe from our Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips with the exception of the budgetary allocation for state functions.

It seems like our ceremonial Prime Minister plans to cut more ribbons, break ground or  otherwise spend more time doing ceremonial functions vs addressing the myriad of issues of governance that needs her attention.

One would have thought that given the grave financial situation the  country finds itself in and the many sacrifices that’s required by Jamaica, the Prime Minister would have addressed the country in a nationally televised broadcast.  What on earth was I thinking , outr PM is not predisposed to having any such discussions with the people, having made promises other that administering  a dosage of bitter medicine to the Jamaican  people.

It seems that the PM has left governance to her ministers while she jets around the country and has become  a globe trotter, since becoming Prime Minister.

No evidence of impropriety so far in the forensic audit of the JDIP Program

Dr Omar Davis has indicated that so far he has received no reports of impropriety in the implementation of the controversial JDIP program by the forensic auditor. He has however indicated that the process has not yet completed, but nothing has found yet to indicate any wrong doing.

In relation to the trailer of furniture that was ordered ($60m) , we were told by Dr Omar Davis that the furniture have been unloaded and are being distributed to the various government ministries including the Ministry of Transport and Works.

Dr Davis has reported that nothing amiss was found in these containers and it appears that what was ordered was what has been recieved and a such a decision was taken that the furniture should be put into use according to the original intent, when they were ordered.

Now you will recall that the Contractor General had gone unto the premises of the NWA and demanded the keys to the containers of furniture, after it was reported that there may have been some impropriety involved in the acquisition of the furniture . It was also reported that the containers may have contained stuff other than what may have been ordered by the NWA.

It now appears, given Dr Davis pronouncement thus far, that wool have been pulled over the eyes of Jamaicans and a scandal was created, where none actually existed, thus fooling up the Jamaica populace once again.

Given what we have so far, it appears we may have just wasted millions of dollars, that we do not have, simply to chase a ghost and carry out a political promise that was made on the election trail.

Now we have also learnt that roads and bridges that were close to completion ( up to 80%) have been halted, resulting in major damages to some of these roads by the recent flood rains. Given that May and June are rain months, it means these roads are likely to be damaged further, washing away millions that have already been spent. Given this fact, the cost of these roads are likely to increase by up to 50% ie a 50% overrun in the cost of these roads by this as a result of the extremely poor judgment by those who have been given the responsibly to ensure that every $ we spend is done so in the most efficient manner possible.

How much longer can we continue such policies of waste in the public sector, we need to focus on the process of issuing and monitoring of contracts vs wasting money after the contracts have been issued and completed, to now go back as see if something went wrong.

We must ensure that our public officials are working in the best interest of the country because we cannot continue to spend twice to do the same job, simply because we refuse to complete a job that may have been started by the previous party and start a new project that has the signature of the current party, whichever party currently happens to be in government.

Public Sector Groups says NO to wage Freeze !

The Teachers, nurse, police and Jalgo who represent a large number of public sector workers have all said they have no intention to agree to any wage freeze from the government.

This is an ominous sign given the austerity budget just presented by the Government and set the stage for a stand off between these groups and the government.

Seems like these groups are in NO MOOD to be administered any form of bitter medicine by this government , having voted out the party  who had promised bitter medicine this year.

Its is going to be a tough year ahead for everyone.
