Government to shutdown rail services, sights heavy losses !

When the passenger rail service was restarted under the previous administration, it has hailed as a good move , with thousands of Jamaicans turning out to see the trains and lend their support for the service. Now just six months into his role as Minister of Transport, Dr Davis has warned of the imminent closure of the service sighting losses of just over $$2m per month.

Rather than trying to get more person to ride the train, which is not only safer but highly more efficient mover of passengers and  user of diesel fuel, the government appears set to shutdown this service.

If the support is not their after marketing efforts and continues to rack up losses, then surely I would support that move, but I am not under the impression that this minister has done anything to promote the service since he has been in office and that his move could be seen as a purely political one.

  1. So Omar issues a statement suggesting he had a report for the board of the JRC suggesting that the service be terminated and that report gets carried, no more questions.

Dr Davis can we see the books of the JRC its a public body and can we see a copy of the boards recommendations because, that is not the information that I am receiving.

    • jay you get the email with dudus transcript?

      if so upload them…..please

    • I was making the same point on another blog jay. Decisions are made and the public is not made aware of the rationale behind these decisions and the intellectually lazy media just carries the headlines. Our divested assets are good examples.

  2. I thought that the rail service was shut down months ago……………………..

  3. The present rail system is worthless. The track size/gauge dates back to the beginning of time and is not suitable for the economics of scale we need. Have any of you seen the speed of the rail cars? Dead. Rail requires huge capital, remember we tried making concrete sleepers, then that was aborted due to cost. Every government has tried to sell it, all have failed. Even sugar is worth more. A new rail system can be considered when we pay for the existing toll roads.
